Joseph's Jelly Fish

Joseph has been focused a bit on jelly fish lately.  He keeps asking me why they are called jelly fish.  I give him my best guess...because they move like they are made of jelly.  He has a different idea this morning.

"Mommy, I know why they are called jelly fish."
"Why?"
"Because they eat jelly."
"No.  They don't eat jelly."
"Yes, they do!"
"There isn't any jelly in the ocean."
"Yes, there is!"
"Where does it come from?"
"People throw it in!"

OK.  I know we have a pollution problem on this planet.  But even so, we aren't supporting whole species with our waste.  So I didn't believe him.  ;)

Quote of the Morning

I was looking for a band aid for Joseph and remarked that our family sure goes through a lot of band aids.

He replied, "That's because we have deadly dogs."

You don't have to laugh too hard.  I laughed enough for everyone.  That kid is a crack-up!

Ironically, the reason he needed a band aid had nothing to do with the dogs.

Deep Thinker

My Joseph has a gift for expressing the obvious.  Tonight it was,  "Mommy, we should organize the whole house."

I agree.  WE should.  But WE don't have the same vision, so WE probably won't be organizing anything.

Ramblings

We made it through Sacrament Meeting with less drama today.  Notice I didn't say no drama.  We were just more discreet.  It seems that I am very popular among the masses when it's time to claim a spot on the bench.  And even though I feel like I am eight-sided, I still only have two sides if lots of people want to sit by me.  Sometimes I can come up with a 3rd side, but you have to be under 35 lbs or my legs will go to sleep.

So even though it was not the most relaxing hour and 15 minutes, and I started to consider moving to a less stressful bench, we had a few comments that things were quieter for us during the meeting.  Ah, we are so good at faking!

We had FHE on pioneers tonight.  We generally love FHE, but sometimes I want to sit on the kids to keep them still.  If it isn't then, it's surely during scriptures.  I am fully expecting these kids to thank us for not killing them once they experience these moments with their own children.

Chad spent the week with the deacons at scout camp last week.  Daniel was with him and things were quieter, though we missed both of them.  It was a hot week, ending with rain. We had to call in a neighbor to help put down a cow.  I drove everyone down (minus Leah  - who wanted to stay behind with her daddy) to Utah on Saturday to visit my dad and make a stop at my sister's house.  The rain helped keep things cool.  Is it bad to be wishing for winter already?  I don't like to be hot!

I am definitely rambling here because I think I'm supposed to say something and be entertaining, but I have no focus tonight.  I'll end the random thoughts with some pictures I took of Sarah and Joseph a couple of months ago after they spent considerable time in the dirt.  I'm certain they will thank me for these later.  ;)

Children's voices...oh how sweet.

Sacrament Meeting last Sunday was fun.  Joseph had thrown a couple of high-energy tantrums before we left for church and was warmed up for just about anything to set him off again.

Halfway through the first adult speaker, he got into an argument over a small activity pad and ended up ripping it in half in a tug-of-war he started.  I saw the signs of a nuclear meltdown forming rapidly...a twisted facial expression, darkened eyes, sitting back on the floor, and his arms rising.

I let him know that it was his fault the book ripped (because I'm a firm believer in acknowledging fault...like any other award-winning parent) and then reached down to scoop him up to take him out before the tantrum was fully formed.

Sadly, I was wrestling a writhing 4-year-old while trying to squeeze past Daniel and my extra large church bag sitting on the floor.  I nearly made a quick get away, but my long skirt got longer and grabbed my foot, almost taking both of us down.  As I finally approached the chapel doors (shh...be still) with Joseph in a football hold, he started kicking and screaming and raised his arms straight up in an effort to slide out of my grasp.  So my free hand went over his mouth and his heels made repeated contact with my left shin.

We hobbled past a few surprised and amused folks sitting on a couch in the foyer to an empty classroom. There I dumped him a little less than lovingly in the middle of the room and walked out, closing the door behind me.  I sat on another couch and made as if nothing were amiss.  I don't think I was convincing because the screams of rage coming through the very thick door just over my shoulder were pretty loud.

Eventually, he screamed himself out.  He and I returned to the chapel doors (shh...be still) and waited for the intermediate hymn to begin before calmly returning to the rest of the family.

And what song do you think they were singing?  Yes...In Our Lovely Deseret (Hymns, #307).  "Hark!  'Tis children's music.  Children's voices, oh, how sweet.  When in innocence and love, like the angels up above, they with happy hearts and cheerful faces meet."  Verse three nearly had me laughing out loud...

They should be instructed young
How to watch and guard the tongue,
And their tempers train and evil passions bind;
They should always be polite,
And treat ev’rybody right,
And in ev’ry place be affable and kind.

Find the entire song here.

Most people at church can't believe Joseph has a temper because he's just so darned cute and quiet in his classes.  There are few more believers now!

I imagine all the great grandmas and grandpas in heaven were smiling down.  Heaven would have been a much better place to experience it from!

Down on the farm

Our farm is growing!  We had 3 little kittens born on Mother's Day.  They are very cute and still haven't started venturing away from their momma.  Leah is very drawn to animals and these babies are getting a lot of her attention.  She doesn't handle them yet, but she crawls under the table where they are and stares at them...for a long time.

We hatched chicks...twice.  We've come to admit that we are no good at hatching eggs.  We don't know what we are doing wrong, but the first time we started with 2 dozen and ended up with 4 chicks (though many more had been moving the day before they should have hatched).  The second time we started with 32 eggs and had 5 eggs hatch, then one chick died several days later.

Luckily, there is a mill in town where we can buy as many chicks as we want.  We bought 15 chicks to go with the first batch.  One of those chicks died; I mentioned it in a previous post.  Then we had our 4 chicks and got a call from Chad's dad.  He had access to free chicks and we could have as many as we wanted.  So we weren't really in need of more chicks, but the price was right.

Fast forward to the present...we have 54 chicks.  FIFTY-FOUR!  We'll see how that works out.

We did sell 3 of our lambs a couple of weeks ago.  We still have our bottle-fed lambs since they are not afraid of us.  We have staked them out in the orchard to help us keep the grass down out there.  But lambs are not very smart and we are constantly going out there to untangle them.  I'm glad it's summer and we can send the kids out there.

Tonight, Chad and I held a mini-rodeo and caught the last two lambs to put them in a back corner of the orchard that is all grass.  We hope it's not too late to tame them (though my hope is weak).  It was quite a site to behold.  When lambs don't want to be led, they lay down.  So we dragged two lambs and got tired and sweaty.  It was so much fun.

I am grateful we have the opportunity to raise these animals.  I watched Joseph help me wrangle the tame lambs as we hooked them up tonight.  He got pretty firm with one of the lambs and smacked her on the rear to get her moving.  It was funny...I don't think she even noticed.  There aren't very many 4-year-old boys having that experience.  Even Sarah tries to manage the lambs sometimes.  :)  The kids gather eggs, fill water troughs and throw hay over the fence.  Tonight they helped plant more of the garden.  It's a great life.  If we ever have to leave it behind, I will be sad, but grateful to have lived it at all.

Light weights

I weighed Joseph(4) and Sarah(2 1/2) this morning. Any guesses?

Here are some hints: they are 4 lbs different...Joseph was wearing a sweatshirt...Sarah still had last night's diaper on...they are BOTH still in front-facing car seats

Give up? Of course you do. I wouldn't expect anyone to care enough about this to make a game out of it. But it's a much better lead-in than just announcing it right off.

Sarah weighed in at 28 lbs. Joseph was 32. These kids are eating constantly. WHERE is it going? I had been considering letting Joseph move up to a regular booster with just the van seat belt because it would make getting in and out of the van so much easier. But he still looks so tiny in his car seat and at only 32 lbs (they are made for use up to 40 lbs.), I think he would be safer as he is now.

Sadly, I have the opposite situation. I have long out grown any car seat. (And several favorite outfits.)
